A SURVEY OF CHINESE FILIPINO SUPERNATURAL BELIEFS
A BOOK BY YVETTE TAN
Chinoy Ghosts is Yvette Tan's in-depth exploration of Chinese Filipino (Chinoy) supernatural beliefs, rituals, and folk traditions. From the oldest Chinatown in the world in Binondo, Manila, to temples and Taoist shrines, Yvette uncovers how centuries of Chinese influence shaped local folklore, death and mourning practices, and spiritual life. The book delves into animistic traditions, worship of the genius loci or "landlord" spirits, and real-life anecdotes from practitioners who straddle modern life and ancient beliefs. Part storytelling, part sociological study, Chinoy Ghosts reveals a rich, hidden world rarely discussed outside the close-knit Chinoy community. Every edition is translated into German, allowing international readers to engage with this fascinating blend of culture, spirituality, and history.
